What Is Pipeline Pigging?

Pipeline pigging is the practice of sending a device — a “pig” — through a pipeline, driven by product flow. Cleaning pigs scrape out wax, sediment, and liquid buildup. Inline inspection (ILI) tools, often called smart pigs, carry sensors that measure wall thickness, geometry, and metal loss as they travel. Both types work while the line stays in service, which is what makes pigging one of the most cost-effective maintenance methods available.

Regular cleaning runs restore flow efficiency and remove the conditions internal corrosion needs to spread. Inspection runs find wall thinning, dents, and cracks early, so crews repair a known defect at a planned dig site instead of responding to a rupture. Why Pig Tracking Makes or Breaks a Pigging Program

A pig you can’t locate isn’t maintaining anything. Pig tracking confirms the run happened the way it was planned — that the pig launched, passed every checkpoint, and arrived at the receiver. Without it, operators risk stuck pigs, incomplete cleaning runs, and inspection data they can’t align to a location on the line.

It starts with the signal source. They’re tested to military-grade shock and vibration standards for high-pressure gas lines, and select models log 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, pressure, and temperature data during the run — so the transmitter itself becomes a maintenance sensor, capturing how the pig actually behaved inside the line.

Along the route, the APEX AGM detects each passage using magnetic and low-frequency electromagnetic detection plus an external geophone — three ways to confirm a pig even through heavy wall thickness. Each passage is timestamped with GPS pulse-per-second synchronization, accurate enough for integrity engineers to correlate pig position with ILI sensor data and verify tool speed stayed within spec. With LTE, optional Iridium satellite, and Bluetooth on board, crews confirm passages from the truck or the office — no one drives out to sit on a checkpoint. And if a pig does get stuck, the same APEX unit converts to a handheld receiver to walk the line and find it.

The hardware runs on six D-cell alkaline batteries — up to 400 hours in low-power mode — and operates from −40°C to +85°C, because pig runs don’t wait for good weather.
