Case Study: Hearing the Pig Coming: Leapfrog Tracking of an MFL Run in West Texas

A third-party pig tracking company tracked a 2-mile MFL inline inspection run in West Texas using just two Propipe North America APEX Above Ground Markers (AGMs) fitted with geophones. The tool carried no transmitter, so the APEX units detected its strong magnetic signature while the geophones picked up its sound. The crew leapfrogged the two units ahead of the pig, streamed data live over cellular, and detected every passage.

Case Study: Satellite Pig Tracking in Mountain Terrain

A third-party pig tracking company tracked an MFL inline inspection run on a mountain pipeline just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. Propipe North America’s APEX Above Ground Markers (AGMs) covered most of the tracking points: units near the city reported over cellular, and units in the remote mountain sections used Iridium satellite modules. The markers were hibernated after early deployment, woken remotely on run day, and all data was collected for the run.

Case Study: Remote Receiver, Live Results

A third-party pig tracking company rented 10 APEX Above Ground Markers (AGMs) from Propipe North America to track a multi-day pigging program near Burlington, Washington. The units were placed once and left unattended for the whole program. Every cleaning run and the final MFL inspection were tracked live, including each pig’s arrival at a receiver on a dock about a mile offshore.

IPCE 2026 Insights: Pig Tracking Is Becoming More Connected

The Propipe North America team recently returned from the International Pipeline Conference & Expo (IPCE) in Calgary, where we had the opportunity to meet with pipeline professionals, demonstrate our technology and, most importantly, hear directly from the people working with pig tracking and pipeline integrity every day.

How Does Pipeline Pigging Improve Pipeline Maintenance?

Pipeline pigging improves maintenance because it moves operators from reactive repairs to planned, data-driven upkeep. Cleaning runs protect the line, inspection runs find defects early, and a tracking system — transmitter, AGM, and software working together — makes the whole program verifiable. Every run confirmed, every passage timestamped, every dataset feeding the next maintenance decision.

Pipeline Pig Tracking: The Complete Guide

If you’re running a cleaning pig, batching pig, or inline inspection (ILI) tool, you need to know where it is throughout the run. Every checkpoint confirms the pig is moving as expected. Every missed detection creates uncertainty. In some cases, it can mean hours of additional field work, unnecessary excavation, or delays to the entire operation.
